Soft Teeth

a homey 90s kitchen 🍓 | home reno

I woke up today and suddenly decided I wanted to renovate my kitchen from a monochrome black, white and grey minimalist’s haven into a maximalist, homey and very cosy 90’s style kitchen complete with retro ceramics (maybe something with fruit or bees on), and a curtain to hide the washing machine.

[I’ll probably use some hooks under the countertops and a net curtain rail to hang this!]

I really want to install a new backsplash but the Winchester Summer Fruit tiles I’ve seen cost £22 EACH and I just can’t afford that nor can I justify spending that much money but look how beautiful they are:

So instead I’ve chosen some tile paint in a laurel green and I’ll paint the backsplash instead to brighten up the kitchen and give it back some much needed colour!

I think I will also paint the little radiator we use for the tea towels in that same green, as well as install some faux wood pattern vinyl over the countertops because I just can’t stand how dark they are anymore, they’re literally black and look so cheap and tacky I hate them.

The last thing to change will be the flooring. Currently it’s a grey tile linoleum which is an easy swap for again a faux wood pattern lino to match the countertops, it’s not as if we need much it’s only about a five by five foot floor space. It’s quite a tight little kitchen you have to sort of dance around each other if there’s more than one of you in there lol

[I love this wood I think it’s oak]

I haven’t decided yet what I want to do with the cupboard doors… They’re going to be the hardest I think as I have no idea if it’s even going to be possible to paint them with them being shiny and glossy. But if I can, I’d absolutely love to cover them in a satin or matte white paint and bring the shine down on them and then add rounded brushed gold handles. If not however they will have to stay as they are and I’ll sulk about it…

To kick off the renovation I bought a new oven mitt. I know, bit random, but seeing it brought so much nostalgia and memories came flooding back that I couldn’t not. It’s totally something my ma or my childhood best friend’s mum would have had in their kitchen growing up!

I remember my ma was obsessed with mice, bees and strawberries growing up, a lot of ephemera in the kitchen would feature them heavily from the tea, coffee and sugar caddies to little trinkets and ornaments. And I hope to replicate that in my own way and bring back the charm, character and a bit of whimsy to a space that’s meant to be the heart of the home.
